CAR RENTAL

Hiring a car is essential when you holiday at Wonga Beach because there is no regular public transport. Nevertheless, wherever you stay, the countless attractions in this part of North Queensland strongly urge you to have access to your own car.

Car rental companies are located at both the international and domestic terminals of Cairns Airport. If your arrival is during school holidays or the weekend and late in the day, we recommend that you pre-book your car to avoid queues to process your rental contract. This frees up time for you to visit any shops or supermarkets who may close early, before your check-in.

Wherever you want to rent a car, it is possible to check out the nearest major car hire office from the website links below.

Note: Ensure your car hire contract covers roadside assistance and also find out who the service provider is.

DRIVING

If you are new to Australia, on the road, please remember to Keep Left and always give way to traffic on your right especially at roundabouts. Planning on a long self-drive tour?  Don't forget to check road conditions.  Use this website link: RACQ Road Conditions

Please note that if you wish to travel beyond Cape Tribulation, the road between Cape Tribulation and Wujal Wujal is unsealed and a 4WD is required. The further north you drive, the more likely it is that you will meet rainforest animals crossing the road especially at night as they are mainly nocturnal. Many of the rural roads are not lit and rely on reflector markers so please watch out for animals who may run or jump out suddenly onto the road. Click Resources for more information.

RAILWAY

Between Brisbane and Cairns, the tilt train, "The Spirit of Australia" operates five days a week with multiple stops in between. The distance is 1,681 km and the journey takes 24 hours. The train arrives at Cairns Terminus which is integrated with the Cairns Central Shopping Centre, but there is no car rental office handy. With competitive domestic flight prices, we recommend that you travel by air to Cairns unless you are looking to stopover on the way.
